The It’s On Portal – Providing Data Intelligence into youth activities around Southwark

As we come closer to the launch date for the It’s On portal, I thought I would share with you guys some of the progress we have made since my initial article on the project.

Many of the reports which were made in SSRS have been tested and refined so that they display all the required data to tell users information about the different youth activities available in Southwark. These reports have also been integrated into a website created by my colleague so they are easily accessible and intuitive to users. The easiest way to demonstrate the progress is a tour of the website itself; since the website isn’t fully complete yet i’ll just keep the tour to the main pages with content. I will be writing an article in future when the website is fully operational and will be giving a full tour 🙂

Home Page

The home page displays a list of the most popular activities in Southwark based on a calculated popularity score – This initial view gives portal users a very quick glance at the activities which are favoured by young people from Southwark. Besides the top activities is a Twitter feed of the It’s On website (@itsonsouthwark) displaying all our latest tweets and mentions. In general the itsonsouthwark twitter feed focuses on Southwark news, CSR, and youth activities.

Activities Page

The activity page allows the portal user to select an activity and view its details. The activities are categorised based on the data taken from the Whatever website – This allows users to easily track down or browse through the different types of activities available. When an activity has been selected the appropriate details are displayed on the page and a small map is also rendered to display its location.

Reports Page

The report page integrates all the SSRS reports into the website portal. From various drop down lists, portal users can select the type of report they wish to view. The filtering options will change accordingly based on which report is being displayed and upon changing these filter values the report will be updated to reflect the data. In a few of these reports it is possible to drill down into a different report which will show the most popular activities based on school or area.

Schools and Pupils Page

The schools and pupils page provide brief profiles of each of the schools, teachers, and pupils that participated in the It’s On project. Each profile has been or will be written by the pupils and teachers themselves. The profiles aim to give each participant a chance to express views on It’s On as a whole and allows them to mention any positives or negatives about the project.

As you can see the portal itself has made immense progress over the past couple of weeks. There are still a few minor things to do before the portal is fully complete but development as a whole seems to be almost done. In the near future I will be writing an article which covers the fully functional portal and also the launch party which will be happening in October. I am also hoping to get some more guest blogs from project participants to get their views, similar to the blog written by Bobbi and Dana.
